South Salem Invitational At Bush Pasture Park, Salem

Cool temperatures in the sixties aided runners, as a moderate day fell most of the morning at Salem ‘s Bush Pasture Park. This is an old and venerable meet on the Oregon XC and in spite of the inclement weather racing founds found some spirited competition, which continues the strong tradition of the event. In the girls’ varsity race Hayley Gregoire of Beaverton went out fast assuming the lead by the 200 meter mark. She pushed the pace through a 5:42 first mile running alone a good four seconds ahead of the chase pack, which consisted of Killian Friedrich & Vivian Hawkinson of South Salem plus Hollins of Sherwood.

There was no holding back for Gregoire, as she raced up the hill a good forty seconds ahead of her closest pursuer reaching the top in 15:35. From that point onward it was just a question of note slipping on the wet grass as she raced down the final steep hill before working her way to the finish. Her winning time of 18:58 is virtually the same as the winning time the previous year of Erin McLaughlin and twenty seconds better than her own time the previous year on a dry course. She put in a solid summer of training & the hard work is paying off as she prepares to battle at state.

South Salem ‘s Friedrich & Hawkinson worked together for most of the race to drop Hollins off their pace & then raced each other in the late stages of the race with Killian Friedrich claiming second in a time of 19:38: 9 seconds in front of Vivian Hawkinson. Together they led their team to the championship over Sherwood 74 to 91, while Redmond, led by fourth place finisher Tafna Mitchell edged Sandy by a point & Marist by four with a total of 130. Emily Trosion of Reynolds came home 5th ahead of Hollins & Marcie Gale of Thurston was 7th. Caitlyn Lewis of Sandy placed ahead of Rhonda Costin, a familiar last name for XC fans in the state, who finished ninth, while Molly Bohrer of Marist rounded out the top ten.

Expectations were high for the Beaverton runners as Beaverton ‘s dynamic duo of freshmen from 2009 returned after placing 1 -2 respectively last fall. Unfortunately Kavanaugh had been battling an illness & was not at full strength yet despite problems they were tucked seemingly comfortably behind Dylan Croeni of Washougal, who led the way through the first mile in 5:03. The trio rounded the stadium for the second time at about the 7:28 mark before making a wide circle that surrounds the starting area and they stayed together as they raced at the bottom of the steep hill, which was where more problems occurred. All three runners went off course attempting to go up the hill early at the point, where they should have passed going down it. Croeni was the closest to not breaking stride & he opened a lead while both Kavanaugh & Oekerman fell on the slick grass. Although KK stated afterwards that the fall did not really make much difference from that point the die had been cast & Croeni maintained his lead.

Dylan pulled away during the ensuing portion of the race to win in a fine time of 15:53. Dan Oekerman held on to place second once again with a time of 16:00.6. Kyle Ruhlin of Thurston moved passed a n ailing Kavanaugh to claim third in 16:05: two seconds in front of the Beaverton sophomore. Mike Sheridan of Churchill finished 5th in 16:12, while Trento Kirshner of Redmond followed two seconds behind that. Reynolds runners Mubark Melbrat & Jake Taylor garnered 6th & 7th to lead their team to a second place finish behind Beaverton, which won 59 to 71.
