The skies unloaded their moisture prior to the New Balance race at Western Oregon University making the course soft & a bit mushy at times. That, of course, did nothing but hinder harriers hoping to run fast times on the usually dry & sun-baked course. The weather conditions reminded some of the first year, when the race moved to the Monmouth campus, when Megan O ‘ Reilly zipped to victory in the premier race. For her part Priscilla Timmos did her best in recalling that day in 2005, as she raced out immediately and challenged anyone to stay with her.

There were no takers as Alexandria Cross & Ragan Allen let Timmons go & battled for second place. The pair did pick up a little ground, as the Skyview star slowed a bit during the second mile before picking up the pace again in the latter stages of the race. From that point onward she kept extending her lead from 11 to 14 seconds before finally winning by 18 seconds in a time of 18:45. It is a bit hard to relate the time, as the course was so soft that it provided no springboard but, given conditions, it was a solid effort. For Priscilla, whose avowed goal & training focus has been Foot Locker, it was her second victory of the year following last Saturday’s triumph at the Run A Ree.

Alexandria Cross & Ragan Allen are both much improved over last year & they waged a spirited battle behind the leader. They went from somewhat working together early to challenging each other during the second & third mile with Cross moving ahead late to claim second in a time of 19:03 to edge Allen by a second. Impressive also was Claire DeVoe of Lincoln, who fell well behind early & then put in a big surge during the last mile. With a half mile to go it appeared that she might actually catch the pair, who then reopened a sizable gap but DeVoe regrouped in the last 400 meters to finish in 19:05.

Kristen Coffman of Tualatin placed fifth with 19:39 on a day in which she celebrated her birthday & Shannon Susbauer of Milwaukie took 7th edging Silverton ‘s Morgan Anderson by half a second. Austin Lundin of Valley Catholic, Desyre Blackburn of Aloha & Brigid Behrens of Corvallis rounded out the top ten & were the only other runners in the featured race to break 20 minutes. Talli Kosklea of Newberg & Michaela Freeby, winner earlier at Canby, just missed the mark as they placed 11th & 12th.

The guys’ race was a much different affair as Matt Auer of Crescent Valley led the way through the first mile in about 4:58. Trailing just behind was a pack of about six runners that included Franklin’s Ian Burgess & Jackson Baker as well as Andy Bennison of Central Catholic, Nick Roche of Tigard & Zach Newsom of Sunset. Auer slowed a bit during the second mile yet retained the lead with a time of 10:05 but he was soon eclipsed by Burgess & Bennison, while Baker loomed closely behind the pair. For Burgess it was a simple case of biding his time and with about a mile to go he made his move, which led to a ten second victory in a time of 15:51.

Bennison fought to stay with Burgess and in doing so was able to open up a short lead on Baker, which he maintained until the end to garner second, while Baker scored a bronze two seconds behind in 15:53. Nick Roche finished alone in 16:08 for 4th and Zach Newsom was 5th. Nathan Love of Tualatin clocked 16:20 for 7th in front of Lincoln ‘s Sky Lofgran, Skyview ‘s Colby Gilbert, while Matt Auer held on for tenth. Brad Usselman of Skyview took 11th.

Fletcher Hazelhurst of Franklin won the boys’ 3-4 varsity race with a time of 16:21 & Kyle Thompson of Central Catholic placed 2nd (16:29). Piper Donahue of Grant led the girls’ 3-4 race with a time of 19:51 while Morgan Johnstone of Tualatin finished in 2nd (19:58). The 5-6 varsity races found Jozelin Hernandez of Benson (19:38) & Nolan Sekermestrovich (17:07) victorious.
