The Lakers got their feet wet running in the Northern 2A Regional Cross Country Championships in Carlin, Nev., on Thursday - literally, their feet were soaked.
In qualifying both its boys and girls teams for the state championship on Nov. 3, North Tahoe runners - as well as the rest of the 2A field - splashed through a 10-foot wide stream in the middle of the course at Carlin’s Chinese Gardens.
Luckily for the athletes, a sunny, 72-degree day greeted the meet.
“It was a neat course,” said Laker coach Warren Mills, explaining how several runners stumbled into the creek as they tried to get through. “It was the best course I’ve ever seen in Nevada.”
And Mills has seen a few courses.
North Tahoe’s boys and girls qualified with third-place finishes in the team competition.
On the boys’ side, the Lakers were edged by Sage Ridge and Whittell, finishing with a score of 85 compared to Whittell’s 70 and Sage Ridge’s 48.
Individually, North Tahoe’s Miles Heapes placed eighth with a time of 19:44. The winner, Nathan Chellman of Sage Ridge, posted a time of 17:35.
Heapes was followed by teammates Joey Griffo (13th, 20:08), Carson Clark (19th, 20:25.86), Luke Funicella (20th, 20:26), Max Hoffman (20:36.46), Hugo Ramirez (27th, 20:37), and Tom McElravey (20:54).
The race was tight, as 21 runners finished between 20 and 21 minutes.
“We ran well. It was probably the meet for us all year,” Mills said. “I’m real jazzed about how we came out of it.”
The coach was also pleased that he had three freshman boys - Clark, Funicella and Ramirez - contribute to the effort.
“We had three freshman in the varsity race, which is pretty much unheard of,” Mills said.
The Laker girls placed third behind Sage Ridge and Virginia City with a score of 57. Sage Ridge won with 41 points and Virginia City had 46.
Individually, North Tahoe runners took the eighth- through 11th-place spots, as well as 19th through 21st. Claire Kelley, the winner from Sage Ridge, posted a time of 21:49.
Maiya Greenwood was eighth in 24:50, followed by teammates Sierra Postler (ninth, 24:54), Brenda Ramirez (10th, 24:59), Caitlyn King (11th, 25:02), Julia Levy (19th, 26:22), Nicolle Ramm (20th, 27:20), and Carry Postler (21st, 28:10).
The 2A, 3A and 4A Nevada State High School Cross Country Championships will be held at Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Park on Saturday. The 2A girls are scheduled to race at 10 a.m., the 3A girls at 10:45 a.m., the 2A boys at 12:30 p.m. and the 3A boys at 1:10 p.m. For more information about the state meet, visit www.niaa.com.
