Presidential Road Race

The Kennebunk Rotary Club will be putting on the 16th annual Presidential Road Race on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The race is a 5K run/walk, as opposed to the 5-mile event of years past.

The reason for the change, race director Norm Labbe explained, was to avoid a conflict with Sunday's Sportshoe Center Maine Marathon, Relay and Half-Marathon, which is also in its 16th year and was traditionally held on a different weekend.

"We're hoping it works out," said Labbe. "Weather's supposed to be good. Sounds like a great morning."

Three years ago, the Presidential Road Race was moved from spring to fall for weather reasons, and it hasn't missed a beat.

The new 5K course is certified by the USATF. Like always, the race will start and finish in front of Consolidated School at 25 School St. in Kennebunkport, where registration and the presentation of awards will be held.

A 1K "Kids' Fun Run" will precede the main event, beginning at 9:15 a.m..

All net proceeds from this race will fund the Kennebunk Rotary Scholarship program. It has been able to help worthy students with annual scholarships totaling in excess of $20,000.

Timing will be provided by 5K Sports and Race Management Services until 11:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will follow promptly at the Consolidated School Gym, where there will be plenty to eat and drink. The prize list includes a raffle available to all bib holders.

The course is scenic, beginning and ending in a quaint New England village, going through beautiful, wooded foliage, and proceeding directly along the coast and the Kennebunk River district.

The new 5K course will NOT include the windy stretch of Ocean Avenue near former President George H.W. Bush's summer home.

Runners and walkers can still register on the day of the race for $25. They are encouraged to show up between 8 and 8:30 a.m. to register.
