My 9 year old daughter is starting soccer soon, and her coach has decided to try a new approach to tracking the teams fitness. She has decided that in 6 days, they will all run a timed mile. My daughter in not a distance runner, but is active in sports and dancing. Should I be concerned about her safety where there is no time to train? I also am questioning the rationale of deciding their fitness level by having them run this distance. Should I raise a red flag and not have her participate?


Obviously, your daughter can't get in shape in 6 days, but if she has good fitness from her other activities, she may be able to complete a mile. If she can't, just have her walk. She doesn't have to run fast. I'd like to see a larger emphasis on general physical fitness everywhere so that almost everyone could easily run a mile. Running can be an enjoyable part of a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime.
