West Salem freshman Brooke Chuhlantseff continued the stellar start to her high school cross country career by winning Saturday’s Saxon XC Invitation at Bush’s Pasture Park.
After winning the freshman portion of the CVC Preview on Monday with a time of 12 minutes flat on the 2.1 mile course, fastest among all girls, Chuhlantseff outkicked Dallas senior MaryKate McGuire to win the 5,000 meter race in 18:15.
McGuire finished second in 18:29.
Chuhlanteseff’s time is second fastest by a girl in the state this year behind South Eugene’s Sarah Tsai of South Eugene, who has run the 5,000 meter distance in 18:15 this year.
“It was nice to see Brooke run a race where she was patient for the first two miles and then was able to take off whenever she wanted,” West Salem coach Tom Jimenez said.
“Certainly Brooke's fast time is a credit to the race that MaryKate McGuire of Dallas ran. Brooke wouldn't have run so well had not MaryKate continuously pushed the pace from the start. Big credit to her.”
Corvallis won the girls portion of the race with a score of 65 points. Host South Salem placed seventh with 172 and West Salem was third in 182.
La Salle won the boys race with a score of 58.
West Salem placed fourth among boys teams with a score of 117, led by Jake Beach’s seventh-place finish.
Dallas placed seventh with a score of 201, including senior Clay Stuhr placing ninth.
