Following up on her gold-medal and meet-record performance at the Non-Public B State championships in the 100-meter dash as a freshman last spring, Booker is adding to her trophy case with some sizzling sophomore performances.
She copped gold medals in the 55-meter dash and the 400-meter run at the Colonial Hills Conference Championships. In the Bishop Loughlin Games, a showcase event for area high school athletes held in New York’s 168th Street Armory, Booker took silver with a 7.08 in the 55 meters.
At the NJ Spiked Shoe Club Holiday Festival, also at the 168th Street Armory, Booker’s winning time of 25.10 in the 200 was rated as an elite performance by Spiked Shoe. She also won gold in the 55 meters. Booker qualified for the Eastern States Championships, scheduled for Feb. 26 and the National Scholastic Championships, slated for March 14 through 16.
“She is getting exposure to the toughest competition possible, and that’s good,” said IC coach Haneefah Norman.
Immaculate Senior Arteena Nah took silver in the 55-meter dash behind Booker in the CHC championships, providing the Lions with a powerful duo for sprint relays.
On the boys side, juniors Marlo DeLeon, Matt Sunga and Brandon Harris are as fine a trio of hurdlers and jumpers as IC has had in recent years. DeLeon and Sunga took third and fourth, respectively, at the conference meet, and Harris sixth.
DeLeon and Sunga also hope to pile up points for the Lions outdoors in the long jump and triple jump during the spring.
Next up for Immaculate is the Jersey City Armory Development Meet tomorrow. The Essex County Championships will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26.
