5A GIRLS RACE by Colleen Collins
5A BOYS RACE by Colleen Collins
Cool temperatures & overcast skies greeted runners during the morning session of the state, but the skies let loose during the afternoon to make conditions difficult for achieving solid times yet for many the day was still a great event. Cole Watson of Rogue River was most impressive as he rolled to victory in the boys’ 3A individual race to win by over half a minute over second place finisher Corbin Helt of Creswell, while Andrew Landstum of Portland Christian placed third. Watson’s time of 15:52 was easily the best time of the day for all the divisions for male runners. In the team race for the division Nyssa easily won with a total of 59 points to the 109 of second place Union. Southwest Christian claimed third with 121 points to edge Cascade Christian by nine points.
Ashley Baldovino of Lakeview won the 3A girls’ division with a 20:00 clocking to defeat second place Kayla Nagunst of Rainier by eight seconds. Austin Lundin of Valley Catholic finished third in a time of 20:10. The team race saw St. Mary’s earn victory over Catlin Gabel in a very competitive race 73 to 74. Bandon placed third with 131 points.
In the boys’ 4A race Jed Tolbert made a late move to draw away from Brady Beagley of North Valley to win in a time of 16:04. Parker Bennett of Sisters garnered third, while Siuslaw’s Joseph Campbell, Jacob Berkner & Brad Finnell took the 4th through the 6th positions. In spite of their high placement Henley still was able to claim the team victory with a 49 to 57 total.

The girls’ 4A race saw an individual duel between Siuslaw team mates Raelyn Robinson & Samantha Pummer with Robinson scoring a narrow victory over Pummer by three seconds. The winning time was 19:47.Sutherlin’s Chelsea Palmer finished in third. Marist ended Siuslaw’s winning streak at State by claiming a victory 58 to 66. Hidden Valley took third with 106 points.
The afternoon session began with the 5A girls’ competition & it started with a bang as Charlotte Fisher of Crescent Valley bolted into the lead almost immediately. By the time that they had reached the hill by the side of the track only about 200 meters after the start she held a 15 meter lead over the throng of runners, who were giving chase. Charlotte raced along the top of the hill along the side of the track & by the time she made the turn at the far end of the track the pack began to close in on her reducing her lead to a mere five meters. The chase pack consisted of Anna Demchuk of South Albany, Angelica Rodriguez of Hermiston, Jessica Wolfe & Mikhaila Thornton of Mountain View, Jenna Mattox of Bend & a pack of Summit runners that included Megan Fristoe, Kelli Schueler, Eirann Cohen, Kira Kelly & Brit Oliphant. At that early point in the race the Summit team was making a statement.
With the field reeling Fisher in the thought occurred that the premature move, which she later related had been calculated, had been a mistake, but as she raced above the soccer field and then turned away heading towards the far end of the course, Charlotte maintained her lead of the field. She was not going to just fold. The action was now out of sight and by the time that they had reached the mile in 6:05 Megan Fristoe had assumed the lead and was trailed by Suzanne Lande of Thurston, Angelica Rodriguez & Charlotte Fisher.
They finally returned to view by the baseball diamond along the road at around the 7:30 mark and there were still a good deal of runners in contention but at the front were Rodriguez, Fristoe, Thornton & Wolfe. Following closely behind was a large group that included Lande, Fisher, Summer Cano of Century, Meredith Wells of Crescent Valley & the Summit legion, but as they neared the pond the leaders now began to assert themselves & they pulled ahead of the chase pack. By the time they neared the far end of the pond the race for first had been reduced by one as Thornton began to fall behind the newly formed lead trio.
Fristoe pushed the pace as she rounded the pond and opened a gap over Jessica Wolfe, who raced a bit in front of Rodriguez. Thornton, meanwhile, struggled to remain in contact just a bit behind, while the pack loomed behind her. By the time that they had circled the pond & headed back to the hill by the track Fristoe had opened the gap to ten meters, while Wolfe & Rodriguez followed in order. The running time was 12:26 as they headed towards the hill having passed the two mile mark just a bit earlier. Well behind them the chase pack was now left to battle for fourth place & a large group raced fairly closely together including Summer Cano with a slight lead followed by Thronton, Mayfield, Oliphant, Fisher, Cohen, Mattox & Schueler.

Megan Fristoe charged up the hill and opened up a seven meter lead over Rodriguez, who had passed Wolfe for second. By the time she was above the soccer field (14:04) Fristoe had widened her lead to a good ten meters over Rodriguez, who in turn had a five meter lead over Wolfe. It was fifty meters back to the pack, which was now headed by Jenna Mattoz, who was beginning to rally her strength for the final portion of the race.

Once again they raced out of sight and they did not return to view by the baseball field until around the 16:30 mark. In the intervening period Megan had opened up a 25 meter lead over Rodriguez, who was another 20 meters in front of Wolfe. Megan’s winning time was a fine 18:52 for her first individual State championship & Angelica Rodriguez, who was only in her first year of cross country in spite of being a senior, claimed second in 19:09. Jessica Wolfe claimed third, while Kelli Schueler made her dependable late charge through the pack to garner fourth. Jenna Mattox finished just ahead of Bend runners Eiran Cohen & Brit Oliphant, a freshman. Kaytlin Fischer of Glencoe placed 8th ahead of Charlotte Fisher whose valiant effort earned her a berth on the podium & a trip to the Border Clash. Camelia Mayfield of Ashland scored in tenth place, while Summer Cano rounded out the top eleven. Kira Kelly of Summit placed 12th ahead of Jessica Vig of of Crater, while Sara Fristoe of Summit placed an exclamation mark for her team by taking 14th.

The team contest saw Summit claim (the second straight title) a resounding victory with a low score of 21 points, which was 70 in front of Crescent Valley, which was also supported by the 15th place effort of Meredith Wells. Crater took third in the team scoring and was followed by Ashland & Bend. I should also note that, after looking at some of the lower team placement, it is a shame that the Mountain View & Hermiston girls were not in the race. They were both well superior to some of the teams & the state ought to make an effort to correct this slight. Qualifying to State should not be left to the luck of being in a poor league.
The 5A race among the guys saw a pack stay together for quite some time. It was a phalanx of runners that was quite deep as they raced away from the start & then raced up the hill. By the time that they had made the turn towards the soccer field Thor Dodson of Corvallis had the nominal lead over the proverbial cast of thousands, who were giving chase. At the front of the pack, however, were Daniel Winn of Cleveland, Jacob Maxwell of Thurston, Dylan Arana of Springfield, Wilder Schaaf of Ashland, Michael Shogren of West Albany, Pat Madden of Summit, Max Zemstov of Woodburn & Gustavo Cortez of Marshall. Tucked just off the side & just behind loomed the Crater corps that included six runners, who were all dressed in bright orange. Like the Summit girls had done earlier, the Crater guys (Josh Elliott, Max Runia, Kade Jensen, Hunter Saunders & Neil Seibert) were making a statement.

After they raced out of sight the race was transformed so that, when the runners next came into view, Dylan Arana had taken a lead over a small pack that included Kade Jensen, Dan Winn, Wilder Schaaf, Josh Elliott & Neil Seibert. That pack of five remained intact as they raced around the pond but Schaaf began to fall back shortly before completing the loop. It was not a good time to fall off the pace, because once they had rounded the pond & headed for the track Max Runia put in a solid surge. By the time that he had reached the top and then made the turn towards the soccer field he had opened a good fifty meter lead over Elliott & Winn. Elliott on his part remained calmed thinking that he had faced the leader every day in practice knowing there was still plenty of time in the race. Well behind them were Schaaf, Jensen plus Jon Obeso of Crater.

That confidence proved wise for during the time that they had raced over the back side of the course Elliott & Winn had moved into the lead, when they returned to view. Far behind them, probably 70 meters back, followed Arana & Runia. The race was now between the leaders and, as they raced towards the pond, it was hard to make a prediction as both seemed to be running quite fluidly. In another two hundred meters both runners seemed quite the opposite, as both runners appeared to be laboring, although Elliott had opened a slight gap. Elliott reached the track & looked behind him, as if he were spent, while almost at the same time Winn peaked over his shoulder as well. The surprise came, when Elliott surged away on the track in a very authoritative matter to win in a time of 16:03. It was his second straight title and, as he noted later, the pressure was off. Daniel Winn finished second in a time of 16:07 noting that he was hardly disappointed to finish behind such a quality runner.
Kade Jensen followed ten seconds later to take third and Dylan Arana placed fourth. Jon Obeso took 5th ahead of Wilder Schaaf, while his team mate Paul Schwartzer followed five seconds after that. Gustavo Cortez earned 8th in front of Summit freshman Travis Neuman. Max Runia & & Hunter Sanders of Crater took 9th & 10th to lock up the team title and Pat Madden of Summit garnered 12th. Kirby Garlitz of Mazama, Ben Condrea of Crescent Valley & Neil Seibert of Crater rounded out the top fifteen.
To no one’s surprise Crater overwhelmed their challengers in the team competition to win 25 to 85 over Ashland. It was Crater’s third straight title. Summit finished in fourth with 107 edging Hermiston by six points.
