Location Hayward Field
A stiff breeze was the only negative weather element facing athletes at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon on Friday and, although collegians dominated the bulk of the action, prep athletes ran impressively as well. Jesuit’s Annamarie Maag & Springfield’s Tim Costin led the way for the preps, yet young Paige Rice, but a 7th grader from Portland, etched her name indelibly as well by placing 2nd in the women’s 1500 Varsity B section. Running against a field of collegiate runners she placed 2nd with a time of 4:36.70. That time has only been bettered once this season by Oregon high school runners. Only Crater’s Kayleigh Tyerman, who will run for San Luis Obispo next year, has a faster time. Tyerman for her part took a huge lead, as she led off the girl’s distance medley and widened it the rest of the way to finish in a time of 3:39 for the 1200 meter leg far ahead of her competition. Unfortunately her teammates were unable to hold the lead & South Eugene claimed the victory over Southridge.
Maag was equally as impressive in the 3K. She began with a first lap of 79 and only her Jesuit compatriot Noelle Van Rysselberghe could stay with her. The strength of the Crusader team was easily evidenced for Jesuit’s Payton Schutte ran alone through most of the race & placed third. Still it was Maag’s day as she ran the 800M in 2:38 & zipped through the 1200M in 3:56. By the time that she had blazed through the 1600M in 5:16.8 the only question seemed to be her final time & that was an excellent 9:55.37. The time was not only the sophomore’s PR but also the top time in the state this year. She is the only runner in the state to have broken the 10 minute barrier so far. Van Rysselberghe finished 2nd in 10:18 & Schutte placed 3rd in 10:25. Beaverton’s Ally Aschbacher was 4th just ahead of McNary’s Kayla Perry.
Tim Costin made his own personal statement as well by spread-eagling the field in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Flowing smoothly over the barriers and assuming the lead early he continued to open a gap over the rest of the field and won with a stunning time of 9:31.33. South Kitsap’s Jon Phillips ran an impressive 9:54.43, which was almost 30 seconds better than third-place finisher Michael Sherman. Even more amazing was the fact that this was his first effort in the event. Fans could hardly have guessed with his fluid motion and one can only wish that the state contested this event. Costin’s time can only truly be appreciated, if you recall that Taylor Morgan won the old XO meet in 2006 with a time of 9:38 to defeat Kenny Klotz, also from Central Catholic who also ran 9:38. Although it was Klotz’ first run over the barriers Morgan had run the event before that.

While Maag & Costin both made victory a forgone conclusion Elliot Jantzer had a different type of race in the 3K. Although he opened with a 64 second 400M to lead South Eugene’s Sammy Kirtner, Jantzer drew away early & appeared to have a facile victory in hand Colorado’s Andrew Berberick of Mullen made a move with about a lap to go. He moved loudly on the back-stretch to close a gap that had been about 20 meters and caught Jantzer, as they began the final turn. As Jantzer had picked up the pace, when he heard the fans screaming, Berberick still seemed to pass him easily and seemed as if he would take the victory, yet Jantzer fought back in the final straight to win a thrilling battle with a time of 8:33.45 to 8:33.74. Zach Elliott of Crater took third with 8:48, while Sunset’s Aaron Back & Jesuit’s Patrick Maag earned 4th & 5th.
In other action Mullen claimed the boy’s distance medley defeating Sheldon & Camas. Ryan Crouser of Barlow, who had led Oregon for the year with a toss of 62’ 7” topped that with an effort of 65’ 10 ¼ “.
Oregon’s Galen Rupp won the 10K in a time of 28:28.68 defeating Luke Puskedra and Shadrack Biwott won the Bill McChesney 5k with a time of 13:36.25. Olympian Andrew Wheating scored in the 1500 with a near record 3:40.92 & Nicole Blood annexed the 5K with a time of 16:11.58. Former Clackamas star Claire Michel, now running for Oregon, won the steeple with a 10:28.92. Olympian Jenny Barringer made her own share of history with a world-leading 4:08.38 in the 1500 to put the icing on the proverbial cake. It was a fine day & even better meet.
