A Vancouver track and field club made a strong debut, and an established team from Woodland posted more winning results on Saturday and Sunday at a pair of youth track and field state championship meets.
The Evergreen Storm, a newly formed club for young Vancouver athletes, had two relays and three individuals win gold medals at the Oregon Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships. Members of the Storm qualified for regional competition in 38 events during the state meet at Willamette University in Salem.
At the Washington state meet at Chief Sealth High School in Seattle, members of the Flanagan Clan Girls Track and Field Club posted eight individual victories. About 20 Flanagan Clan athletes qualified for the regionals, which will be held July 11-12 at Willamette University in Salem.
Also, Megan Kelly from Camas posted victories in the long jump (16 feet, 7.6 inches) and the 400 meters (58.64 seconds) for girls born in 1993 and 1994.
Complete results the state championship meets were not posted on Monday. Results that were reported to The Columbian by local clubs and individuals are in today’s Community Sports Scoreboard.
The Evergreen Storm is a new team organized by Scott Slamp, who teaches at Covington Middle School. The team, which began training together recently, took 18 athletes to the Oregon meet. They earned 25 medals and qualified for regionals in 38 events.
Individual state champions for the Storm were Carolina Siofele, Tee Tee Martin, and Ramon Ortiz. Siofele won the shot put (40-2) and the discus (143-5) for girls born in 1991 and 1992. Martin won the 100-meter dash (12.1 seconds) for girls born in 1993-1994. Ortiz won the 1,500 (4:45.2) and long jump (18-2) for boys born in 1995 and 1996.
The Storm won both relay races for boys born in 1995-1996. In the 400-meter relay, the team of E’Lon Mack, Eddie Richardson, Carl Falls, and Mitchell Heng won with a time of 47.3 seconds. In the 1,600 relay, Ramon Ortiz, Falls, Richardson and Keaton Spiller won in 4:04.6.
For the Flanagan Clan, Priscilla Timmons won the 1,500 (4:56.73) and the 3,000 (10:36.71) races for girls ages 15-16 at the Washington state meet in Seattle.
Holly Meler won the 2,000-meter steeplechase for girls 17-18 (8:02.92), and finished second in the 3,000.
Jessica Flanagan won three events in the 11-12 age group. She threw the turbo javelin 100 feet, 3 inches, tossed the discus 63-5, and cleared 3-11¼ in the high jump.
McKenna Flanagan won the 10-and-younger turbo javelin (60-3).
— Anna Adamko of Columbia River High School placed 10th in the girls javelin at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships at Eugene, Ore.
Adamko threw the javelin 131 feet, 6 inches at the meet for girls 14-19 that was held in conjunction with the USA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Katrina Chamberlain of La Center was 17th in the heptathlon with a score of 4,000 points.
The competition was for athletes ages 14-19 seeking a place on the USA Junior Pan American Games team.
