Southern Durham High senior sprinter Desmond Lawrence won a national indoor track and field championship last weekend in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York. Lawrence, a Spartans football running back star and the N.C. High School Athletic Association 55-meter indoor sprint champ, won the 60-meters in 6.93 seconds. He plans to run track and play football at East Carolina. “It felt really good to win,” Lawrence said. “I got a really good start and got ahead early. It was a pretty easy race.” Lawrence ran a 7.0 in the semifinals and was seeded fourth going into the finals. “I tried to get a little looser for the finals,” he said. “I was used to running the 55. I warmed up more for the finals.” Millbrook sophomore Samantha George narrowly missed the gold medal in the mile with a 5:01.29 for second-place. Southern Durham’s Sherman Ragland was fourth in the 60 high hurdles (8.09). Mitch Mallory of Wakefield was fifth in the two-mile (9:16.11) and Green Hope’s Bryan Spreitzer was fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:26.19).
