Kasen Covington, a 17-year-old senior-to-be at Capital High, won the triple jump at the 2009 World Youth Track and Field Trials in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Tuesday. He won with a jump of 48 feet, 4.5 inches.

Covington, the two-time defending state high school champion and a former age-group national champion, qualified for the U.S. world team which will compete in Italy next month. He flies from Michigan to Italy on Saturday.

This will be his first international competition.

"I'm definitely excited — I'm trying not to get too nervous,'' Covington said. "I'm excited to see what competition is like at the international level.''

Covington will compete in the long jump on Wednesday morning in Ypsilanti.
