Question
Hello Coach,
I am training some young sprinters and they have plenty of talent. I want to know what would be your suggestion as to training specific muscles relative to strong sprinting. And what traing apparatus are most useful???
Sylvester
Answer
The key muscles that sprinters need to develop are as follows: Quads / Hamstrings, Glutes (buttocks), Calves, Abdominals, Back, Chest, Shoulders, Biceps, Triceps, Ankles and Feet. Basically, the whole boby needs to be as strong as possible because sprinting is a very dynamic and explosive event. The stronger the entire body, the less fatigue and physical breakdown will be a factor. A balanced weight training program is highly recommended.
